Deux North's Hunt 3 took place on August 16th, 2013. The air was thick with fresh cut wood plus chain grease, and breath stank of elk burgers. A group of people, calling themselves hunters, were out looking for an experience worth remembering
We came to Boonville, NY like the thousand other visitors that had descended upon the small town, to see the Boonville Lumberjack Games. The RV's had been parked at the fair grounds for over a month leading up to the games, but we found a primitive site outside of town, and a river cold enough to allow for 5 minutes of bathing before numbness.
We got to riding quickly and explored the foothills of the Adirondack mountains. Routes took us through forests into small towns and villages that quietly welcomed us. We ate milkshakes at the diner and cooked sausages over the campfire. At the lumberjack games we met competitors, not enthusiasts. We had a lot to learn about the rules of their sport, but we knew what drove them. We understood what was behind their nightly practice sessions, their trips around the world and their quest for glory in a sport that offers little, just as they knew ours.
